ISCO Pioneers Industry First with Innovative HDPE Solution for CCR Project

HDPE piping solution to comply with EPA regulations for coal ash disposal in landmark CCR project.

Change is upon the CCR industry and ISCO is there to provide a solution to bring utilities into compliance with the new (EPA) regulations. With coal ash being one of the largest types of industrial waste in the United States, the EPA updated its regulations to address the risks that come from coal ash disposal. As a landfill specialist, ISCO is able to keep up with ever-evolving changes by supplying a variety of piping solutions and providing creative approaches to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

HDPE Advantage

ISCO teamed up with Fisher Contracting and AECOM to tackle a specific CCR project. The goal of this CCR project was to decontaminate coal ash slurry water and transport the clean, treated water from the CCR landfill through HDPE pipe. Project Manager, BJ Applegate, explains why he chose high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe over other materials in the marketplace. “When dealing with coal ash chemicals, a leak-free, corrosion-resistant pipe is crucial to the long-term success of a project. Not only is HDPE pipe an easy choice when selecting a reliable product, but we also value our partnership with ISCO as knowledgeable landfill experts.”

First in the Industry

This job presented a unique opportunity for ISCO to be a part of an industry first. With almost 2,000 feet of 54-inch to 63-inch DR 26 HDPE pipe to fuse, this project was an opportune time to bring in McElroy’s large diameter fusion machine, Talon 2000. This self propelled, self-loading machine is designed for fusing miles of straight line HDPE pipe, which involves less heavy equipment and manpower needed for the job.

ISCO’s sales representative David Osborne explains, “This project was one-of-kind as it was the first time the Talon 2000 machine was used to fuse a 54-inch 90 degree elbow. ISCO is proud to partner with Fisher contracting and McElroy to introduce innovative approaches to using McElroy equipment.” The project also involved using a conventional McElroy machine to fuse 1,000 feet of 54-inch pipe, 560 feet of 48-inch pipe, 350 feet of 42-inch pipe, 80 feet of 36-inch pipe, along with multiple fittings.

“We are excited to be part of this monumental moment to do something that has never been done,” BJ Applegate said. “With ISCO’s hands-on fusion expertise, we were able to learn the capabilities of the Talon 2000 and get the job done safely and effectively. The challenges with CCR projects are only going to continue as the EPA enforces new restrictions to coal ash disposal. With innovative approaches in mind, ISCO continues to push the envelope in the HDPE industry to ensure these types of projects are safe for the environment and the community.
