Large-Diameter HDPE Pipe Solution for Sewer Replacement in Greenwood, SC

Cost-Effective, Airtight Pipe System for Wastewater Infrastructure

The Greenwood Metropolitan District (GMD) needed a durable, cost-effective solution for its $46 million wastewater treatment plant expansion and sewer replacement project. To improve performance and reduce long-term maintenance, GMD selected a large-diameter HDPE profile pipe system, known for its corrosion resistance and long service life.

HDPE Profile Pipe Chosen for Wilson and Coronaca Creek Sewer Replacement

This large-scale sewer replacement project required:

  • 2,840 feet of 72-inch ID HDPE gravity sewer pipe
  • 440 feet of 60-inch ID HDPE gravity sewer pipe
  • 320 feet of 48-inch ID HDPE gravity sewer pipe
  • Six PE manholes with 48-inch risers

All pipes were joined using integrated electrofusion bell-and-spigot technology, ensuring leak-free, long-lasting connections.

Why HDPE Profile Pipe Was the Best Choice

The decision to use spiral-wound HDPE profile pipe was based on several key advantages:

  • Leak-Free Performance – Watertight joints prevent infiltration and exfiltration.
  • Corrosion and Chemical Resistance – Unlike concrete or ductile iron, HDPE withstands harsh sewer environments
  • Cost-Effective Installation – Lightweight materials reduce handling and installation costs
  • Long Service Life – HDPE pipe is designed for 100+ years of performance
  • Flexible & Earthquake-Resistant – Adaptable to shifting soils and environmental conditions

Jack Ravan, CEO, Water and Sewer Innovative Resources, praised the technology, stating:
“I can honestly say that this is a pipe system technology whose time is well past due.”
